Definitions
refer to the meaning of words.
Each concept is a building block to support conclusions.
Conclusions are accepted as Knowledge,
and depend on the premises which are stated.
Our understanding is expressed in Words
that are seen and heard.
These word symbols must refer to particular things,
actions of things, relations, characteristics, etc.
Definition is the Bridge between each Word
and the referent—
what the word means.
Failure of a bridge is caused by
defective supporting structure.
Defective Premises, and defects in the Definition of words
that express Valid premises,
will result in the collapse of Knowledge.
The foundation of Knowledge is built with
Premises and Definition of words.

The desire for “Fairness,”
arouses similar pandemonium.
You cannot get to a conclusion
when the Bridge of understanding
fails to establish the relation between
Word—Meaning.
The Bridge will collapse when In-Definite meaning of words
fails to support the conclusions that are built upon them.
The structure of knowledge built with In-Definite words
is a collection of boards which lean against each other—
without nails: not bolted together.
Indefinite,
indeterminate, meaning of basic words
is the idea for this internet web site.
Why are words passionately used,
without clear definition of meaning?
Mark Twain expressed this by a cynical quote;
widely accepted, but rarely understood:
“ When in doubt,
Always tell the truth.
Every “Good ” person
agrees with this advice.
Only a cynical person
will grasp the inference that
one is unable
to tell “the truth,”
when “in doubt”

The word:
“ FAIR”
is the first example I chose,
to demonstrate the conflicting Personal Interpretations
which result from the flawed Definition - usage,
provided in many dictionaries.
What explains this: Indefinite Meaning?
Why are so many people, so confident,
that they understand the meaning
of a word they speak
(and write),
to describe government policies?
[ Groucho Marx said: “ Let me
whisper
in your ear.”
Then, “ he moved closer,
and SHOUTED !

We laugh at the ridiculous confusion of the
Marx Brothers movie, but we live this same
Burlesque routine every time we discuss:
“ FAIR. . . .”

How can they agree
“unanimously? ”
when the “Agreement”
is personalized ( like
Burger King does it -
“Have it your way! ” ).
The Primary Definition of a word
in the Oxford English Dictionary is the core meaning -
which is varied in different circumstances. The word
“Clutch” refers to: seize, snatch, hold tightly.
The mechanical device which holds on
to a rotating shaft of an engine was
named for what it does.
(The device which slows down,
or stops a vehicle,
also holds on to a rotating wheel.
But it is
named for what it does.
The clutch holds on to the engine,
similar to a homeless hobo
who hops the Hoboken freight train.
He “Clutches” the train
to be moved - like the
“
Emperor of the North Pole.”
He does not hold up
the train like Jessee James; who
“Brakes” the train,
to “clutch” the money.)
Another definition of
“Clutch” refers to a nest of eggs,
a brood of chicks, and a cluster
(a “hand - full” of things).
FAIR
Definition Number 1.
A periodical gathering of buyers and sellers,
in a place and at a time ordained by charter
or statute or by ancient custom.
(In many cases fairs are resorted to
for pleasure-seeking
as well as for business; and
in England
they sometimes survive merely as gatherings for pleasure.)
Often modified by prefixing other words,
indicating the things sold,
the time of year,
or some special object for which the fair is held;
as: cattle-,
cheese-, horse-,
ram-, sheep-fair, etc.
Voluntary relations
are the central elements of the concept:
“FAIR”.
Social relations are
without force
or implied threat of force:
The purpose of gathering
(a “clutch” of people) for a FAIR
is to get hold of things by
negotiating voluntary
agreements to buy and sell.
Government is the “Social” institution
which holds on to sociable relations,
by arresting those (like Jessee James);
who hold up,
or “Brake” the peace.
The means of achieving the goal -
“Braking,” or arresting, may lead to confusion
of contumely or condign holding the peace.
The Voluntary context of FAIR
is not consistent with Forced
compliance of a:
“FAIR TRIAL”,
or
“FAIR TAX”.

and hold up
Jessee James - as the
role model for Tax Collector.]
Several proposals for Enforced
government policies
such as
taxation and international trade
have used the “FAIR” label to encourage
voters to support legislation which will
be enforced!
I have experienced “Voluntary” charity drives
and U.S. Savings Bonds sign-up drives
at work.
These “Voluntary” contributions and payroll deductions
were promoted by zealous supervisors who implied
causal relations between participation,
and pay raises or promotions.
The primary definition of
“FAIR”
implies that: “buyers and sellers”
have voluntary relations,
in the same way
that the term: “Brothel”
is understood to contrast
with “Bastille”.
Alleged “FAIR TRIALS”
with enforced verdicts,
and enforced: “FAIR”
tax policy, are as
“FAIR ”
as the verdict of a Jury— to determine what you prefer
to buy at the market (as contradictory
as a Female - Brother.)
This is why I have begun this project to unravel the
Indefinite, Indeterminate
Definitions of the word: “FAIR”,
which is used to endorse popular procedures for trials,
and enhance proposals for government legislation.
The explicit meaning of “FAIR” relations,
is the understanding that voluntary agreement is requested;
instead of: demanded
with the threat of forced compliance.
There is no such thing as
“FAIR ROBBERY”,
“FAIR TRIAL”,
or
“FAIR TAX”.
